Over the course of the last four years, Donald Trump has made significant gains with minority voters. A major gain so far has been with Hispanic's. Due to former President Trumps previous comments on immigration and constructing a wall at the US Southern border, many will surely be surprised with this development. However, the data doesn't lie.
The Data
For example, Miami-Dade county, a heavily Hispanic Florida county shifted 22 points to the Republicans from the previous 2016 election. This shift symbolizes a significant transition of Hispanic voters away from the Democrat party.
Why is this happening?
This shift could be happening for a number of reasons; but, it mostly comes from an increased fear of Democrat policies becoming more 'socialist' or 'communistic.' In this county and many others there is a large amount of Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Venezuelan Hispanic voters. Due to each of these ethnic groups experiencing communism firsthand in their former countries (and immigrating to the US because of it), many of their fears have returned. With Republicans continuing to push these talking points there is a great chance more of these groups could continue to vote to the right. This demographic shift will be greatly important for Republicans to maintain as the US European population dwindles. With more Hispanic celebrities and athletes jumping on the 'Trump Train,' it seems this shift is inevitable and could help 'save the GOP' in the future.
